What is Independence Day?

Every year on July 4th, Americans celebrate Independence Day — the birthday of the United States! It marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the 13 colonies officially broke away from British rule.

First made a federal holiday in 1870, and later a paid one in 1938, the Fourth of July is now filled with parades, fireworks, concerts, BBQs, and patriotic pride. People celebrate by flying the flag, wearing red, white, and blue, and gathering with family and friends to honor America’s freedom.

From small-town festivals to big-city shows, it’s a day to celebrate liberty — and what makes our nation special.
