Legacies of Justin~Dr. T.R. Allen

Dr. Thomas Richard (T.R.) Allen's life was indeed remarkable and reflects a diverse range of contributions to his community. Here’s a more detailed summary of his significant achievements and roles:

  1. Early Life and Move to Justin (1847): T.R. Allen’s family relocated to the Justin area from Missouri in 1847 when T.R. was just a year old. This early move was pivotal in shaping his future and setting the stage for his extensive involvement in local affairs.

  2. Confederate Service (1861-1865): As a young man, T.R. volunteered to serve in the Confederate Army. His military service was marked by his capture when General Kirby Smith surrendered in 1865, which was a significant event towards the end of the Civil War.

  3. Militia and Civic Roles in Wise County: After the Civil War, T.R. Allen played a crucial role in defending settlers in Wise County from Native American raids by organizing a militia. His civic involvement extended to various official positions including: Justin of the Peace, Tax Assessor, County Commisioner, and County Sheriff.

  4. Medical Education and Practice: In 1888, T.R. Allen pursued a medical degree at St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1891. After completing his education, he returned to Wise County to start his medical practice, providing essential healthcare services to the community.

  5. Move to Justin and Legacy: In 1904, T.R. moved to Justin, Texas, to work alongside his son, Joseph Allen, in the medical field. He continued to contribute to the local community until his passing in 1927.

T.R. Allen’s life exemplifies a dedication to both military and civic duties, as well as a commitment to advancing medical practice in his region. His legacy is marked by his diverse roles and his impact on the communities he served.
