LOCAL HISTORY
Justin Early Years
Justin, Texas, has a rich history that dates back to its initial settlement in 1848 by French colonists as part of the Icarian Colony (French Settlers). The settlers chose a location between Oliver Creek and Denton Creek, just outside the present-day Timberbook neighborhood. Unfortunately, the community was abandoned a year later due to illness, conflicts with the local Native Americans, and farming difficulties.
The area was then resettled in the 1880's and Justin began in 1883 with town lots being sold and shops started to open. However, it wasn’t until 1887 that the town received its name. This occurred when Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway (GCSF) extended a line from Oklahoma to Ft Worth establishing a stop in which would become our town. The community petitioned postal authorities to name the post office Justin, in honor of Walter Justin Sherman, a chief engineer.
Prior to Justin being the final name of our town, the area had a couple different names (Denton Creek Settlement, Trail Creek Settlement, The Icarian Settlement, New Icara, and Justine (due to a clerical error).
