THE DIGEST
Get Involved, Give Back & Get Ready – CASA, Mario Kart Fundraiser, & SH 114 Traffic Alert!

Become Part of the CASA Effect

CASA volunteers are everyday people who make a life-changing difference for children in foster care. They get to know a child, connect with the people in their life, and advocate for their best interests in court—helping ensure they’re safe, supported, and on the path to a stable home.

Right here in the city of Justin, CASA volunteers have stepped up for several local children this past year—proving that one voice really can make a lasting impact.

No special background is needed—just compassion and a desire to help. CASA provides training and ongoing support, and there are many opportunities for you to lend a helping hand—from volunteering to spreading awareness in your community.

Be the voice for a child. Be part of The CASA Effect.

LOCAL HISTORY
Hidden in Plain Sight: The Gibson-Grant Log Cabin

In 2015, a remarkable piece of North Texas history was uncovered in Flower Mound. A small ranch-style house was set to be demolished for new development, but inside its walls was something unexpected—a hidden log cabin dating back to the 1860s.

Curtis Grant of Vaquero Development got a tip from the former homeowners about an old 1903 newspaper found in the wall. Curious, he removed the sheet rock and revealed hand-cut logs. Experts later confirmed the cabin was built between 1857 and 1860, making it one of the oldest surviving log structures in Denton County.

The property was originally part of a Republic of Texas land grant. William Gibson, a settler from Missouri, claimed 640 acres in 1854. To keep the land, he built a 16x16 log cabin and farmed the land until his death in 1865. Over time, new families moved in, and by the 20th century, the original cabin had been hidden inside a newer home—unknowingly preserving it.

After its rediscovery, local historians, preservationists, and scout troops stepped in to help restore the site. The Mound Foundation and the Denton County Office of History & Culture are leading efforts to bring the cabin back to its original form. Girl and Boy Scouts have supported the project with tours, videos, planting wildflowers, and creating signage.

Now, this long-hidden cabin is being formally recognized for its historical significance.

Join the Denton County Historical Commission and the Town of Flower Mound for the dedication of the Gibson-Grant Log House as an Official Texas Historical Marker and Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
