The 3rd Annual Crawfish Boil – A Big Thanks!
This past Saturday, we had the pleasure of attending the 3rd Annual Crawfish Boil — a private gathering of friends and neighbors that delivered on every front. A big thank you to Mayor Pro Tem Shelby St. Claire, who led the charge at the boil, serving up an incredible spread of crawfish, sausage, corn, potatoes, garlic, onions, and jalapeños.
The pool was open, the atmosphere was relaxed, and live music by Acoustic Teddy & The SaddleTramps made the evening even more special.
It was a wonderful night of community, conversation, and good food. Looking forward to the next one already.

LOCAL HISTORY
What’s That Ship-Shaped Hill? Welcome to Pilot Knob!

5R22+J8 Denton, Texas
If you’re new to the area and have ever driven northeast of Justin and thought, “Wait… is that a ship?”—you’re not seeing things! That curious land formation is called Pilot Knob, and it has a surprising little history tied to our neck of the woods.
Back in the 1850s, during the days of the Peter's Colony, a small town named Pilot Knob was founded by 29 settler families. The town had a church, a post office, and—of course—the hill that gave it its name. Eventually, the town was absorbed by the growing community of Argyle, leaving only the hill and its name behind.
Pilot Knob is a natural formation made of arenaceous ironstone and sandstone, sculpted by centuries of water erosion. That’s what gives it its unique, ship-like shape! For a long time, it was believed to be the highest point in Denton County at 900 feet above sea level—but a nearby hill near the Denton-Wise County line edges it out by 80 feet.
Historically, the hill served as a lookout point for Caddo Indians, Spanish explorers, early pioneers, and even the Texas Rangers—offering a panoramic view of the surrounding prairie.
So next time you spot that “ship” in the hills, know you’re looking at a piece of local history that’s been watching over this land for centuries.
Stay tuned—more about Pilot Knob in future newsletters! Read More
