THE DIGEST
Helen Keller Week: Leadership, Accessibility & A Local Story That Still Inspires

June 22–28 marks Helen Keller DeafBlind Awareness Week, a national campaign that began in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan declared the last week of June in honor of Helen Keller’s birthday (June 27). Each year, the Helen Keller National Center highlights the strength, leadership, and capabilities of individuals in the DeafBlind community.

This year’s theme—“Cultivating Leadership: Together We Grow”—focuses on developing leaders at every stage of life, from youth to adulthood, and on the importance of collective support and inclusion.

Right here in Justin, we have our own touching example of a community coming together to support someone with vision loss. In the 1970s, 65 friends of W.P. “Presto” Faught—who had gone blind decades earlier—raised funds to build a sidewalk along 4th Street so he could navigate his hometown safely. That sidewalk still exists today as a quiet but powerful reminder of compassion and accessibility.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Hometown Business Spotlight: Master Made Feeds

110 W 6th Street, Justin, TX
Mon–Fri: 10 AM–5:30 PM | Sat: 10 AM–3 PM

If you’ve lived in Justin for long, you’ve likely noticed the galvanized steel building on 6th Street—what you might not know is that inside, you’ll find one of the friendliest feed stores around, run by folks who truly care about your animals and the community they serve.

Master Made Feeds opened its doors in 2019, but the story behind the space runs much deeper. Built in 1948, the building was once a mechanic shop and even a live chicken distributor. Today, it’s been transformed into a small-town feed store serving everyone from horse owners to backyard chicken keepers.

Mitch and his wife, who’ve been part of the Justin community for over three years, run the store with the kind of heart and know-how that’s hard to find. Mitch’s family roots go back to poultry farming in the 1950s, and his decades of experience mean he knows exactly what your animals need—whether they bark, neigh, cluck, or even hum.

Their top customers include horse trainers from Lonestar Park, folks with backyard chickens from all around Denton County, and animal lovers from Southlake, Argyle, Colleyville, and beyond. They offer everything from poultry and horse feed to hay, dog food, llama and alpaca supplies—even pot-bellied pig feed.

And here’s a bonus:
A mobile vet stops by the store every first Tuesday of the month—making it easy to keep your furry friends in great shape.

Mitch and the staff pride themselves on offering major feed brands at competitive prices, but what really sets them apart is their old-school customer service. Call ahead, and they’ll have your order ready when you arrive.

So next time you need supplies—or just want to chat with a local who knows farming, feed, and the future of Justin—swing by and say hello.

LOCAL HISTORY
A Holiday Just for Justin? Let’s Make History Together!

This week—June 26th—our City Council is discussing something exciting, and we at the Justin Journal are all in: a new holiday just for our town! The idea? “Justin Day”—a celebration of our town’s unique name and the history behind it.

So
 how did Justin become Justin?

Back on January 25, 1887, the town submitted a request to be named after Walter Justin Sherman. But, in true 1880s clerical fashion, someone added an extra "e" by mistake—yep, we were “Justine, Texas.” That little mix-up was fixed later that year on October 4, 1887, and from that point forward, we were officially known as Justin.

But there’s another fun date in the mix: June 7, 1887—that’s when “Justin” was first seen in official documents, specifically on the original town plat that many of you have seen around town.

Cast your vote in our poll and help shape Justin’s future—by celebrating its past!

If the city goes forward with creating a “Justin Day,” which date do you think makes the most sense to celebrate our town’s name and history?
