Justin Northwest’s Cooper Lutkenhaus Shatters Records, Brings Home 6A State Gold
Justin Northwest sophomore Cooper Lutkenhaus made history at the UIL State Track and Field Meet, showing the entire state what elite talent from right here in Justin looks like. At just 16 years old, Cooper dominated the 6A boys 800-meter run at the prestigious Mike A. Myers Stadium, capturing gold with a record-breaking time of 1:47.04—setting both a new conference and state record. Competing against older athletes in Texas’ highest classification, Cooper not only proved he belongs, but left no doubt that he’s one of the best in the nation. This is one of our own students representing Justin on the biggest stage—and making us all proud!

LOCAL HISTORY
History Spotlight: Dr. William Henry Pennington
William Henry Pennington was a key figure in the early development of Justin. Born on October 27, 1855, and passing on May 9, 1940, Mr. Pennington was raised and educated in East Texas before making a lasting impact in our community.
In 1883, he arrived in the Justin area and established the town’s very first medical practice. That same year, he partnered with Perry Harmonson to build Trail Creek School, helping lay the foundation for local education.
By around 1905, Dr. Pennington recognized another growing need in the community: a safe place for citizens to store their money. In response, he worked with J.W. Spencer to create the first bank in Justin.
Also in 1905, Dr. Allen advocated for expanded educational opportunities, leading to the establishment of a local college named Pennington College. While we have yet to confirm whether the school was named after Dr. Pennington—the town’s first doctor and founding bank president—it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise.
