LOCAL HISTORY

Remembering J.E. Bradley & Brad’s Confectionery

Another name woven into Justin’s early history is J.E. Bradley, who came to town in 1893 with his father, J.T. Bradley—a section foreman on the Santa Fe Railroad. The family moved down from Caddo, Oklahoma, to work the rails, but J.E. soon found his calling right here in Justin.

In 1909, he began working at the local confectionery store, later purchasing it and proudly renaming it “Brad’s Confectionery.” For decades, Bradley served the town both as a shopkeeper and as one of Justin’s earliest historians. Sadly, on January 4, 1947, a fire destroyed his store along with much of his collected history. Not one to give up, he rebuilt across the street (today’s 4th Street) and carried on with Brad’s Confectionery, working continuously for 45 years by 1954.

Bradley’s legacy went beyond his store. He served on the school board for 20 years, becoming president in 1938, and was also an avid collector of books, letters, and curiosities from authors who sparked his interest.

He retired in early 1966 and passed away that same year. Bradley now rests in the Justin Cemetery alongside many of his family members on the east side of town.

Do you remember Brad’s Confectionery? We’d love to hear your memories or see your photos. Share them with us and help keep Justin’s history alive!
