LOCAL HISTORY
A Glimpse into Justin’s History: The Hedcoxe War

Replica of Peters Colony Land Office currently in Farmers Branch Historical Park

Did you know that the early days of Justin were shaped by land disputes and a dramatic revolt? Let’s take a quick trip back in time!

When settlers first began arriving in the Justin area, land grants were distributed through Peters Colony, a program set up by the Republic of Texas to attract English settlers. The local agent for the colony was Henry Oliver Hedcoxe, an Englishman who was responsible for overseeing land contracts and naming many of the local waterways (as mentioned in previous newsletters).

But not everything went smoothly. As settlers began receiving their land contracts, many found themselves caught in a web of broken promises and unfulfilled agreements. This caused growing tension in the community.

By 1852, things came to a head. A group of 100 frustrated settlers, fed up with the broken promises, revolted against Hedcoxe in what became known as the Hedcoxe War. The settlers raided Hedcoxe's home, removed important documents, and ultimately forced him to leave the area. While some of the records were recovered, many contracts were lost, and some promises were never fulfilled.

This event marked a turning point in the development of Justin and its surrounding areas. To learn more about this fascinating part of local history, check out the full story of the Hedcoxe War on Wikipedia.
