March Gardening Tips from Texas A&M Agrilife

Early in the month, plant peas and greens, followed by beans, cucumbers, and squash later on. Transplant tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants to ensure proper growth before the heat. Use row covers to protect tomatoes from cold. Transplant herbs like oregano and thyme late in the month. Mound soil around potatoes, leaving 6-8" of leaves exposed. Wait until late March or early April to plant melons, okra, sweet potatoes, and southern peas when temperatures warm up. Harvest cool-season crops, monitor for pests, and plant flowers to attract beneficial insects.

LOCAL HISTORY
139 Years of Growth: The Merger That Shaped Justin

March 3rd marks the 139th anniversary of the merger between the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe (GC&SF) and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (AT&SF) railroads. This merger, which took place on March 3, 1886, added 300 miles of track through North Texas, to be built within one year. Due to a Texas law at the time, the GC&SF continued as a subsidiary of the AT&SF until 1965.

Although many towns, including Gainesville, Dallas, Decatur, and Grapevine, tried to attract the rail line, it ended up benefiting smaller towns like Justin and Ponder.

This decision 139 years ago played a key role in shaping Justin into the town it is today.
