Thanksgiving Tips: Food, Football, and Fun (with a Side of Chaos)
10 Quick Thanksgiving Tips
Weather Warning: Wednesday's 80s are misleading—Thanksgiving will be 55°F high, 31°F low. Bundle up!
Trash Day Change: Trash pickup delayed to Friday, Nov 29. One more day to procrastinate!
Plan Ahead: Homeland’s open 7AM-4PM. Stock up early or fight over the last pie.
Thaw Your Turkey: Thaw 24 hours per 4-5 lbs in the fridge or use the cold water method (don’t forget to babysit it).
Cook to 165°F: Aim for 165°F in the thickest parts. No one wants Turkey Roulette.
Clean Up: Wash hands like you touched a wild turkey. Wipes are your best friend!
Be Thankful: Take a breath, be grateful, and try not to fight over the last roll.
Family Time: Play games, share embarrassing stories, and avoid political debates.
Picky Eaters: For no food touching, give them a divided plate. Just don’t let the mashed potatoes touch the turkey.
Leftovers: Have take-home containers ready. Store leftovers for 3-4 days—or freeze them for future you to forget about.
Bonus: Relax, pour a drink, and remember—it’s about surviving the chaos, not perfection!

LOCAL HISTORY
Where the Creeks Got Their Names
Have you ever wondered how the creeks that surround us got their names? Justin is uniquely situated at the confluence of Denton Creek, Oliver Creek, and Trail Creek—each with its own backstory. Denton Creek after John B Denton who died at its bank in 1841. The other two are tied to a controversial figure in local history: Henry Oliver Hedgcoxe.
Hedgecoxe, the local agent for the Peters Colony in the mid-1800s, was responsible for naming many of the area’s creeks and waterways. He chose names that reflected his personal life—naming creeks after his daughters (Harriet and Catherine), his wife (Elizabeth), and even his dog (Trail). The Oliver Creek was named either after himself or his son, also named Oliver.
There’s much more to Henry Oliver Hedgcoxe’s story, including his involvement in a significant conflict tied to his name. We’ll dive into more of his impact on the Justin area soon. In the meantime, check out more about his legacy in the Texas History Journal.
