LOCAL HISTORY
From Historic Roots to Modern Challenges: The Journey of Education in Justin

Photo provided by Mary Emma Tate Library

In the early days of Justin's growth, the community recognized the need for educational facilities for local children. In August 1902, the townsfolk voted to close the small early settlers' schools and unite to create the first Justin school. Subsequently, on November 1, 1902, they approved a significant bond of $2,000 to finance this new school.

While it remains uncertain whether the original school was ever built, Penington College emerged in 1905 as a preparatory school and high school, serving the community until 1913 when a more modern school was established. Today, Penington College still stands as part of The Abbey.

Fast forward to the present day, and school systems continue to face challenges in meeting the financial burdens of providing quality education. The upcoming VATRE proposal for 2024 aims to address some of these needs, and community members are encouraged to learn more about it here.

For more information about this historic venue, visit The Abbey.
