LOCAL HISTORY
Honoring Our Roots: A Reflection on Indigenous Peoples in North Texas

In honor of Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day, we’d like to reflect on the rich history of the people who inhabited this land long before 1850.

In the 1950s, archaeological findings in the Lewisville area revealed that the Clovis people roamed this region around 11,000 years ago—marking the earliest evidence of human presence in North Texas. Following the Clovis, several tribes inhabited the area, though historical records about them are limited. By the time colonists migrated from Missouri to Justin, various tribes were present in the region.

Among them were the Tecuacanas, Keechies, Wacos, Caddos, Anadarkos, Iones, Paluxes, Delawares, as well as some isolated Cherokee and Wichita communities, all residing in or around what is now Denton County.

On September 29, 1843, a treaty was signed to establish peace among the tribes, with the exception of the Cherokee, who chose to defend their land. Although this peace was ultimately not upheld, it represented a pivotal step toward the community we know today.
