City Council Recap
Here’s what’s happening around Justin’s City Council this month — plenty of exciting updates and community-driven projects in the works!
Justin Heritage Museum Progress
The Justin Heritage Foundation is moving forward with plans for the city’s future museum. A land lease agreement is being finalized, which will officially transfer ownership of the house and lease to the Foundation — allowing the City of Justin to step aside and let the project flourish independently. We can’t wait to see this piece of local history come to life!
Eagle Scout Project at Bishop Park
Thirteen-year-old Cary Reader presented his Eagle Scout project proposal, requesting approval to install three fire pits and three ash disposal cans at Bishop Park. Cary has already discussed fire safety and codes with the Justin Fire Department, and is now seeking donations and community support to make it happen.
Veterans Day Event — November 1, 2025
Plans are underway for a Veterans Day celebration honoring all who served. The event will feature a 10 AM walk (with bibs and American flags provided), led by a local Boy Scout troop, followed by an 11 AM ceremony at Bishop Park. The Treble Choir from Gene Pike Middle School will open with music, and Commander Bobby Bonner of VFW Post 5074 will lead the prayer.
Speakers will include Mr. Don Graves, Mr. Josh McAbe, Mr. John Mounce, and Mr. Lloyd Roberts, with a heartfelt National Anthem performance by Carrier Barton. The Parks and Recreation Department invites everyone to join, decorate bikes or scooters for the walk, and stay for the community gathering afterward.
Generous local donations have already shown overwhelming support for this event — a true reflection of Justin’s remarkable hometown spirit. Shuttle service will be available between City Hall and Bishop Park.
Small town, big heart — that’s Justin! ❤️

LOCAL HISTORY
A Look Back: John Watt Berry, Justin’s First Business Owner
When you hear the name John Watt Berry, it might not ring a bell beyond being tied to Justin’s first business—but his story is woven into the very beginnings of our town.
Born in Alabama in 1857, Berry moved with his family to Texas as a child. At just 26 years old, he opened the very first business in what we now know as Justin in 1883. Just a few years later, in 1887, he made history again—serving as both the last postmaster of “Justine” and the first postmaster of the newly renamed Justin.
Berry married Martha Goldman in 1892, and together they had four children. Heartbreak touched the family early: their infant son, Frank, died before his first birthday, and two daughters passed away young. Their surviving daughters married, but the Berry name itself did not continue on in Justin. After the couple divorced in 1906, Martha remarried but had no more children.
John Watt Berry lived until 1928, passing away at 68. Today, he rests in the Justin Cemetery—a reminder of one of the city’s earliest pioneers and a man whose legacy quietly anchors our history.
