LOCAL HISTORY
Breaking News: 1946 Style

Walter Justin Sherman, a dedicated Civil Engineer for the GC & SF Railroad, had a significant impact on the railroad's expansion through Justin. Born in Ohio in 1854, Sherman’s work was instrumental in charting the railroad’s course from Oklahoma to Galveston, connecting communities and fostering growth.

During the critical period when Justin was establishing its identity, there was a need for a name for the local Post Office. Initially, the townspeople had hoped to name the post office “Helm,” but that name was already taken. Sherman, who was present in the area, suggested his middle name, “Justin,” as an alternative.

Though the choice of “Justin” might not have been entirely motivated by a formal tribute to Sherman, his presence and suggestion at the moment of naming certainly played a role in its adoption. Thus, the name “Justin” was chosen, marking a unique intersection of personal contribution and local necessity.

Sherman continued his influential work until his passing in 1937, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the development of the region and the name of a town that bears his middle name.
