LOCAL HISTORY
Justin Early Settlers

This week, we're spotlighting one of the early settlers of our area whose name might ring a bell. The street you're familiar with is named after Peter Harmonson, who, along with his family, relocated to the Justin area from Missouri around 1845. This was the same year Texas officially became a state and three years before the French Icarian settlement at Oliver Creek and Denton Creek.

The Harmonson name was prevalent in the early years of Justin and the surrounding area. According to the 1850 census, Peter Harmonson had three children: Zerrill Jackson, William Perry, and Martha. William Perry Harmonson (WP Harmonson) made a notable contribution to the community by building one of the area’s first schools, Trail Creek School, north of Trail Creek in 1884.

Tragically, one of Peter's grandsons, Peter Coleman Harmonson, and his wife lost their lives while trying to cross a swollen Denton Creek in 1895. Their story is a poignant part of the local history.

Today, the Harmonson legacy continues in our community, with 10 Harmonsons resting in the Justin cemetery and 25 more family members buried at Elizabeth Creek.
