Big News from Northlake!

Exciting progress at the Northlake MultiSport StarCenter — the first wall is officially up! This marks a major milestone in construction, with the facility on track to open in fall 2025. Once complete, it will feature two NHL-sized ice rinks, eight basketball courts (convertible to 16 volleyball courts), plus pickle ball and other court sports.

This $94.5M town-owned, Stars-operated complex will serve as a major hub for local families and sports tourism, expected to attract 1.3 million visitors annually. LOCAL HISTORY
Pilot Knob & the Legend of Sam Bass: Outlaw Hideouts and Lost Treasure

Denton County Chronicles

In our continuing dive into the history of Pilot Knob Hill, this week we turn our attention to one of the most notorious names of the Old West: Sam Bass.

At just 19, Sam made his way to Denton and found work on Bob Carruth’s ranch, located southwest of town. But by 1874, he swapped fence posts for felonies and dove headfirst into a life of crime.

His big break (depending on who you ask) came in 1877, when Bass and his gang robbed a Union Pacific train in Nebraska—getting away with a staggering $60,000 in newly minted gold coins. That’s over $1.5 million today! After the heist, the gang split, and Sam, along with partner Jack Davis and their cut of the treasure, headed for Texas.

The pair found refuge in Rosston (Cooke County), used the thickets of Hickory Creek for cover, and even turned Pilot Knob into a secret lookout and occasional hideout. No one knows exactly how long they stayed, but what keeps the legend alive is this: the coins were never found.

The mystery has lured treasure hunters to Southwest Denton County, hoping to strike gold—literally. Pilot Knob remains a point of fascination for outlaw enthusiasts and fortune seekers alike.
