National Lost Penny Day: Celebrating the Small Treasures We Overlook
National Lost Penny Day, observed annually on February 12, celebrates the simple act of finding a lost pennyāsomething many of us overlook or ignore. Pennies, often considered insignificant and easily misplaced, tend to slip out of pockets, wallets, or purses and vanish under sofas or car seats. But on this day, people are encouraged to make an effort to rediscover these tiny treasures.
The origins of National Lost Penny Day are connected to the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, whose portrait has appeared on the U.S. penny since 1909. It was first established in 1995 by eventologist Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith, who recognized the value in finding small amounts of money and how it can bring both joy and a sense of good luck. Whether itās finding pennies or reconnecting with long-lost items, this quirky celebration allows us to appreciate these small, forgotten things and the memories they may evoke.

LOCAL HISTORY
A Piece of History: The Justin State Bank Building
In 1979, the Dallas County Heritage Commission was searching for a bank to add to their Heritage Village in Old City Park. After much consideration, they chose the Justin State Bank building (originally Citizens Bank)āa historic gem built in 1905 off 4th Street and Highway 156, where the train mural is located today.
Moving the building wasnāt easy. It took two years of careful work and a significant investment to transport the bankābrick by brickāto its new home in Old City Park.
Today, the bank stands proudly in the park, where it continues to be a favorite destination for countless visitors each year, preserving a piece of Justinās rich history.
