LOCAL HISTORY
Bank Heist, Betrayal, and a Shocking Twist: The Robbery that Rocked Justin
On a bright Saturday, March 26, 1955, Justin State Bank was bustling with activity. Little did anyone know, this would be the day the bank would be robbed for the first time.
A man, calm and composed, pulled out a .38 caliber pistol and swiftly demanded cashā$2,500 in total. With the loot in hand, he fled the scene in a stolen car, speeding off toward Fort Worth, seemingly getting away with it all. But the story didnāt end there.
Journalist Ellston Brooks became involved in the investigation, trailing the robber through a series of surprising twists. From an abandoned car to a cafe, a taxi, and a clothing store, Brooks pieced together a trail that ultimately led to the robberās identityāLaFoon.
The LaFoon family, notorious for causing local trouble, had four brothers. Three of them were found with money from the heist. But the real culprit was George Douglas LaFoon, who had fled to Colorado. When the FBI finally caught up with him, he had $1,000 of the stolen money and less than a month later LaFoon plead guilty to armed robbery and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The story didnāt end there. Stay tuned for the next chapter in the history of Justin State Bank, where this daring robbery would capture national attention on television.
