LOCAL HISTORY
Where Sealy Avenue got its Name

Sealy Avenue is named after George Sealy (1835-1901), the president of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Sealy moved to Galveston in 1857. He served as the treasurer of the railroad until it went bankrupt, but he then bought the company during foreclosure and reorganized it. Under his leadership, the company built 300 miles of track in just 300 days.
This rapid expansion led to the creation of many new towns and the growth of existing ones, including Justin. Other towns like Rosenberg, Sealy, Temple, and Krum also saw significant development due to the railroad's construction.
