LOCAL HISTORY
Denton County: A History of Moving Seats
In 1841, after the death of John B. Denton, early settlers sought to create a county in his honor. On April 11, 1846, Denton County was officially formed. Initially, the county seat was located in Pinckneyville, along Pecan Creek, but this lasted only two years before being moved south to another town along the same creek, Alton, in 1848.
Later in 1848, the county seat was relocated again—this time to a location on Hickory Creek, also named Alton, near the only thing remaining, Old Alton Bridge. The town became the county’s hub for nearly a decade, with buildings like a blacksmith shop, saloon, bar, two doctors, and a cemetery.
By 1857, the county leaders wanted a more central location and moved the county seat to present-day Denton. On January 10, 1857, land was auctioned off, marking the beginning of what would become the thriving city of Denton.
The journey of Denton County’s seat is a testament to the vision and determination of its early settlers.
