LOCAL HISTORY
Justin Day: The Day Our Town Got Itā€™s Name

You may know Justin as beginning in 1883 when John W. Berry opened the first store on Christmas Day. However, it may come as a surprise to you that Justin was not the first name given to our little town. Due to a clerical error Justine was the name recorded on January 25, 1887 when the post office opened with Thomas J. Wheeler as the first postmaster. Four months later on May 2, 1887 John W. Berry took over as postmaster of ā€œJustineā€. It wasnā€™t until October 4, 1887 that the name officially changed to Justin and John W. Berry became the first postmaster under the new name.

October 4th, the day Justin officially got itā€™s name!

Pictured here is the first Post Office of Justin, located at approximately 117 W. 4th Street. Sadly, no traces of the building remain today, but its legacy is an important part of our history!
