What's Buzzing Around Town: Super Bowl Hype, Classy Cactus Mural, & The Gentlemen Bandits of Justin!

Good Morning, Justin!

Did the Groundhog Get It Wrong? Well, it looks like Punxsutawney Phil might be a little confused this year! He saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter… but with temps soaring into the 80s this week (including a high of 84 today!), it feels more like spring than winter! Maybe the groundhog took the week off for some sunshine—either way, we’re certainly not complaining about this warm streak! Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts!

LOCAL BUSINESS
A Masterpiece at The Classy Cactus! 🌵

Classy Cactus recently sought to enhance their building with a stunning new feature that would serve as the perfect backdrop for photos and add to the charm of the space. To bring this vision to life, they turned to local artist Adam Davenport, who also created the beloved train mural in town. When the City of Justin EDC/CDC caught wind of the project, they were quick to offer funding to help bring the vision to life, alongside Adam's previous mural.

After three months of meticulous planning and over 150 hours of painting through some chilly weather, Adam Davenport has truly outdone himself! The beautiful mural, completed January 30, 2025, will undoubtedly serve as a vibrant and welcoming sight for all visitors to The Classy Cactus. This masterpiece will be the perfect setting for future photos and a proud addition to the community.

Adam shared that painting murals like this brings him back to his childhood, reminding him of the pure joy of creativity. If you haven’t seen his work yet, Adam is also known for his stunning portraits and murals across Saginaw and beyond. You can explore more of his incredible creations at Davenport Studios.

Next time you stop by The Classy Cactus, be sure to take a moment to appreciate this gorgeous piece of art—and maybe snap a picture or two! 🌵

LOCAL HISTORY
The "Gentlemen Bandits" of Justin

Continuing our focus on the Justin State Bank, the 1970s brought a family adventure that quickly turned into a string of robberies. The “Modern Bonnie and Clyde,” as the media called them, hit a number of small towns, including right here in Justin. On March 23, 1970, this infamous duo began their 13-year crime spree with a robbery at our beloved Justin State Bank. They made off with around $26,500.

At first, the details were a bit sketchy, as witnesses struggled to provide solid descriptions. However, some of our brave neighbors even chased the robbers’ getaway vehicle all the way into Fort Worth. In 1975, the duo struck again, this time making off with about $44,000. Over their spree, they stole an estimated $573,000 before they were caught in 1983. Lawrence Edward Byrom was sentenced to 50 years, and his wife, Alice, received 25 years for their crimes.

One of our readers, John Ogles, shared a personal connection to this history—his mother was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She happened to walk into the bank during the robbery and was told to get on the ground by the criminals. Afterward, she was able to give a detailed description of the robbers to investigators, helping them piece together key information.
