LOCAL HISTORY
The Icarian Bell?

Bell located at First Baptist Church in Justin

In "The Justin Story" by Grace Lee Parr, there's a charming tale about an old gathering bell that has had quite an adventure! Back in 1848, when the Icarians left the area what we now call Justin, they left behind a bell that was used to call people together for church and town meetings.

The story states the bell was then moved from its original home by Oliver Creek to the Old Pennington College, where it was used to call children to school. In 1913, when Pennington College was purchased by the Baptist church, the bell found itself relocated to the back of the church and sat dormant until 1941.

At that time men then came knocking with hopes of turning the bell into scrap metal for wartime ammunition and weapons. Fortunately, Mrs. Alma Bishop came to the rescue, moving the bell to her house where it sat quietly for years.

The bell eventually returned to the church, where it now stands proudly in front of the First Baptist Church at 402 W 8th St, in Justin. Although it no longer rings, its storied past continues to be a cherished part of our community's history.
